Three Ubuntu editions will be reaching their end of life this May. Ubuntu developers have announced 9th of March as the end of support for long term supported (LTS) Ubuntu 8.04, “Hardy Heron”, the desktop edition of Lucid Lynx, 10.04 LTS and Ubuntu 11.10 ‘Oneiric Ocelot’.
The server edition of Lucid Lynx will be supported for another two years. The 12.04 LTS is the first Ubuntu release with five year support for server and desktop. The support had earlier been three years for desktop and five years for server editions.
The recommended update for users of all the three editions is Ubuntu 12.04. The support life for future non-LTS releases will be 9 months. This comes after Canonical and Ubuntu made changes to how overall development cycle is handled.
