Samsung has decided to make the media go easy on the rumours and speculation, announced a date for the Galaxy S 5. In what is traditionally the launch event for the Galaxy flagship device of the year, Samsung has picked 24th of February as the date for Samsung Unpacked.

Calls it Samsung Unpacked Episode 1 with a tag “Unpacked5”. Location is in Barcelona at Mobile World Congress at 20.00 CET, an interesting feat considering Samsung has always launched it’s flagships at their own event in a day devoid of noise from the competition.

This would be interesting as other vendors including close rival HTC, Huawei, Nokia and Sony among others will all be announcing devices. Last year HTC announced the HTC One which stole all the media coverage for weeks before Samsung Unpacked in London the next month. Samsung only redeemed themselves by bringing the Galaxy S 4 to the market early while HTC delayed.

It will be interesting to see events this year. The Galaxy S 5 is rumoured to come in different models, metal and plastic options, as usual the LTE capable Snapdragon option with a Snapdragon 800 or 805, 2GB RAM or the option of Samsung’s Exynos 5430 Octa Core and 3GB RAM.

The phone is also rumoured to come running a 16MP rear camera according to recent photo leak EXIF and a 2MP front camera. Screen is expected to be a 5.2 inch WQHD with 2560 x 1440 pixels. Recent screenshots have shown several Samsung apps and services wearing the flat icon look like iOS 7, not sure how this turns out but there is also a rumour that Samsung will include a fingerprint scanner, only that for the Galaxy it will be on the screen.

There is quite enough to look forward to, and Mobile World Congress is just over two weeks away. Is this something you are eager to see?
