Periscope 1 year anniversary

Periscope is 1 year old! It is amazing how time flies because it seems just like yesterday when the app was bought by Twitter and ushered the era of new age livestreaming to the masses. Now, the company is one year old and decided to release interesting milestones that it was able to achieve in such a relatively short time.

According to their post on Medium, they revealed that Periscope users have created over 200 million broadcasts and watch over 110 years of live video every day. That is not all as Venture Beat also reveals that of the 200 million broadcasts that have been created over the past year, the last 100 million were created in the past 3 months. This means that the platform is growing fast and it is not slowing down soon.

The 200 million number sounds huge but it could be lower than it seems. Periscope took into account the time spent watching on their apps on Android and iOS and not on the Web, of which the latter you can view broadcasts. The number also does not take into account watching broadcasts on Twitter, which is surprising since it is the mother company and they actually released the ability to watch broadcasts within tweets.

That is not all, they also posted a graphic which is a timeline of their achievements since they launched on iOS upto now when they are celebrating their 1 year anniversary.

periscope growth

As it forges on in terms of user base acquisition and raking in more broadcasts, Periscope has challenges in the future. It has to ward off Facebook Live where the social networking giant is rolling it out fast and also we are seeing reports of other players like Google jumping on the livestreaming bandwagon. The focus lens will be directed towards them this year as we see how they will be able to stay afloat in the rapidly flooding livestreaming business.
