New lease of life

WhatsApp is a messaging service that is available on several platforms that extends from feature phones to the current generation of smartphones.

However, last year, the company announced that they were dropping support on devices running outdated systems like older versions of Android (Eclair, Froyo), various Nokia operating systems (Symbian, Series 40 and 60), Windows 7.1 and Blackberry 7 and 10 devices.

Since there are a lot of people out there using such devices, it led to an outcry over the cessation of support of their preferred messaging app. This led to WhatsApp changing their stance that they will stop supporting devices that run Nokia Series 40, Series 60 and Blackberry 10. However, devices that were running Eclair, Froyo, Windows Phone 8 and below and iOS 7 and below will cease having support on 31 December 2016.

Well, now they have decided to extend support of some operating systems they had planned to cease support by the end of this month.

According to Whatsapp.nl, WhatsApp’s co-founder, Brian Acton, revealed the new policy about the support of these older systems. “We will extend Blackberry until the end of 2017. Also Nokia S40 becomes longer supported.” This means users with Blackberry phones running BlackBerry OS 7 or later, Blackberry 10 and Nokia S40 have another 6 months to enjoy updates from Whatsapp.”

So this means that the Nokia Series 60 platform is now the latest platform to be axed from getting support by WhatsApp where support will cease by the end of this month.

Currently, Whatsapp supports Android devices that run 2.3.3 or later, Windows Phone 8+ or later and iOS 7 or later
