Today, Huawei has finally unveiled their new flagship phones, the Mate 30 and the Mate 30 Pro and they are quite interesting.

They have a new design that is reminiscent of the Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro of last year. It has a curved screen with a significant notch at the middle. There are 4 cameras at the back under a circle dome which Huawei calls the ‘Halo Ring’ design that is aimed to mimic dedicated cameras.

Huawei has what they call the Horizon Display for the Mate 30 Pro. The screen tapers at 88 degrees at the edges and makes it look bezel-less.  The Mate 30 Pro has a 6.53 inch Flex-OLED FHD+ (2400 x 1176 pixels) display with the wide DCI-P3 HDR color gamut. The Mate 30 has a normal 6.62 inch Rigid OLED display with a resolution of 2340 x 1080 pixels.

The Mate 30 Pro has virtual buttons at the side on the display which you can use it to change the volume or take photos with it.

The Mate 30 Pro main camera system is seriously impressive. Huawei managed to put  two relatively huge sensors at the back of the Mate 30 Pro. There is a 1/1.54 inch RGGB 40MP f/1.8 wide angle camera, a 1/1.7 inch RYYB 40MP f/1.6 aperture main camera with OIS, an 8MP f/2.4 telephoto camera with OIS and 3x optical zoom. There is also a 3D depth sensor. It can shoot upto 4K 60fps, 4K HDR+ timelapse, real time bokeh and a crazy 7680fps ultra slow motion in 720p.

The Mate 30 has a 16MP f/2.2 wide camera, 40MP f/1.8 main camera and a 8MP f.2.4 telephoto camera with 3x zoom and OIS. Not surprising here since we have seen it in the P30.

The selfie cameras is a 32MP unit with an f/2.0 aperture, the same one as we saw with the Huawei P30 family

The Mate 30 family uses the new Kirin 990 chipset. This is their flagship SoC that runs on a 7nm+ process, has over 10 billion transistors and integrated a 5G modem, a first for Huawei. It supports 5G upto 2.3Gbps up and 1.25Gbps down in the sub 6Ghz 5G band. It supports 8 5G bands unlike other 5G phones that support only 3 5G bands according to Huawei.

Huawei says the Kirin 990 gives you 23% extra CPU performance, 39% extra GPU performance and an insane 460% jump in performance from its Neural Processing Unit (NPU). The Kirin 990 is also power efficient across the board with upto 23%, 32% and 290% power efficient in the CPU, GPU and NPU respectively. The Kirin 990 5G also adds support for the fast UFS 3.0 storage standard.

The Mate 30 Pro has a huge 4500mAh battery that you can top it up fast with a 40W wired charger or a fast 27W wireless charger. The Mate 30 has a 4200mAh battery which is still impressive and was the size of the Mate 20 Pro last year. They also improved their wireless reverse charging where it now charges 3x faster.

Other cool features with the Mate 30 Pro include 3D face unlock, in-display fingerprint scanner, IP68 water and dust resistance, stereo sound thanks to their ‘screen sound technology.

The Mate 30 and Mate 30 run on EMUI 10, which is Huawei’s skin. The Mate 30 series phones won’t ship with Google Services which is something we expected thanks to the company being put on the entity list.

You can also get this phone in several colours  (space silver, emerald green cosmic purple and black) as well as a ‘vegan leather’ edition in ‘forest green’ and ‘orange’.

The Mate 30 will start at 6GB RAM + 128GB internal storage as the base and can go upto 8GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage with options to expand it with external storage. The Mate 30 Pro comes with 8GB of RAM and a choice of either 128 GB or 256GB of internal storage.
