Samsung’s first ever Android Go-powered smartphone has landed in Kenya. While the brand is known for its flagship series, budget Samsung devices have in the past been dismissed as poor quality and lowly spec’d. Well, Samsung has decided to tighten the loose ends and introduce a budget-friendly device that does not suck, at least at first glance.
The Samsung Galaxy J2 Core is now available in Kenya and on top of offering a Kes.10,500 price tag, the device comes with Android Go at its core – pun intended. A quick rundown of the specifications:

- Memory: 1GB RAM, 8GB Storage
- Software: Android 8.1 Oreo (Go Edition)
- Processor: Exynos 7570 (Quad-Core)
- Camera: 8MP + 5MP
- Battery: 2600mAh
Samsung claims that the device should last throughout the day and with the low-resolution display at 540p, this could be easily achievable as there’s little graphics to push.
The entry-level smartphone market is one that is expanding rapidly with new players popping up every other month. Established players in this space already offer Android Go devices with fairly similar or in some cases slightly better specifications than the Samsung device.
Samsung is banking on its brand equity to push their budget smartphone but with other brands releasing devices for as low as Kes.7,000 (such as the Fero Vibe and itel S13), Samsung’s battle to gain mileage in this segment will be an uphill battle.
The Samsung Galaxy J2 Core will be available at all Samsung Experience stores, Safaricom Shop and other authorized dealers countrywide.
