Redmi 12C

Xiaomi Kenya has announced the availability of its Redmi 12C smartphone. This is a budget device that targets people who do not have a lot of money to spend on a phone, or groups that don’t see the need to spend an arm and a leg for the same.

The C series by Xiaomi has always focused on this segment, and in emerging markets where the phones have always sold well.

Kenya is an interesting market for Xiaomi, among other brands. A lot of people here are bargain hunters, and any manufacturer that addresses their needs has surely seen the benefits of appealing to these customers.

Such needs include a device with a big battery and a large display. The 12C promises that and tops off its appeal with a 50MP dual snapper. The megapixel count is an important spec here, and while it does not always translate to great images, people tend to trust any optics that are served by high resolution.

Here are the rest of the 12C’s specifications:

 Redmi 12CSpecs
ProcessorMediaTek Helio G85
Display6.71″ HD+ Display
Rear Camera50MP main camera
Front Camera5MP front camera
Battery & Charging5,000mAh battery, 10W fast charging, 10W in-box charger, Micro USB
Audio3.5mm headphone jack
SecurityRear fingerprint sensor I AI Face Unlock
ConnectivityDual SIM + MicroSD
ColourGraphite Black, Ocean Blue, Mint Green, Lavender Purple
Dimension & Weight168.76mm x 76.41mm x 8.77mm 192g

As seen, it manages to pack a punch, for the price, without going to the extremes that would otherwise push the asking price.

For instance, it has a big cell that tops up at 10W (that is not very fast but we hope this changes in the future), a fingerprint reader, dual SIM, a capable chipset (not the Unisoc one that brands such as Nokia are so proud of, and use quite as often in their entry-level phones) – all in a svelte package that tips the scale at under 200g.

To note, the 12C is not alone in this space because other brands have capable rivals, such as the Hot and Spart series by Infinix and TECNO, respectively, Nokia C series, and realme C series, to mention a few.

Price and availability

Redmi 12C is available in Kenya from today 13th March 2023 in all Xiaomi Stores, Retail partner stores & Jumia. It will come in three variants;

3GB + 32GB at KES 14000

3GB + 64GB at KES 15000

4GB + 128GB at KES 17300
