The past decade has been a disappointing drought for fans of Sherlock Holmes without a new film installment featuring Robert Downey Jr.’s beloved portrayal. However, it seems the game is afoot once more, with encouraging updates about Sherlock Holmes 3 finally seeing the light of day.
In a recent interview with Screen Rant, producer Susan Downey gave Sherlock enthusiasts hope, revealing that a third film is “still very much alive in our hearts.” Despite over 10 years having passed since 2011’s Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows hit theaters, the core team behind the movies remains passionate about reuniting Downey Jr. and Jude Law as Holmes and Watson.
“Every day we talk about, ‘What is the best next version of that?'” Downey shared. “Because anytime I see Robert and Jude together, which fortunately, I do get to see a few times a year, we hang out, and I’m just like, ‘Can I get these guys back on screen together?’ It’s magic.”
The key, she emphasized, is creating a great story worthy of bringing the iconic detective duo back. “There needs to be a really strong reason, it needs to be a great story, and we do have some things in the works.”
While fans eagerly await news on Sherlock Holmes 3, they can also look forward to Prime Video’s newly announced Sherlock Holmes prequel series from director Guy Ritchie. This fresh take will explore the young adulthood of the legendary sleuth, tracing his evolution at Oxford University into the genius detective beloved worldwide.
“In Young Sherlock, we’re going to see an exhilarating new version of the detective everyone thinks they know in a way they’ve never imagined before,” Ritchie teased. “We’re going to crack open this enigmatic character, find out what makes him tick, and learn how he becomes the genius we all love.”
With both a third Downey Jr./Law film and a look at Sherlock’s origins on the horizon, it’s a wildly exciting time for fans of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s brilliant creation. The game is afoot, and the only mysteries remaining are exactly when and how Holmes will return to baffle and delight us once more.
