Airtel Africa has announced a partnership with SpaceX to deliver Starlink high-speed satellite internet services to customers across its African markets. The agreement, revealed on May 5, hopes to enhance connectivity in both urban centers and remote regions throughout the continent.
SpaceX has already secured necessary operating licenses in 9 of Airtel Africa’s 14 operational countries, with applications for the remaining 5 countries currently in process. The approved markets include Nigeria, Kenya, Zambia, Malawi, Rwanda, Niger, Madagascar, Democratic Republic of Congo, and Chad.
The collaboration will bolster Airtel Africa’s next-generation connectivity offerings, benefiting enterprises, businesses, and essential community institutions like schools and health centers in rural Africa. Additionally, the partnership will explore possibilities for expanding rural cellular coverage through satellite backhauling technology.
Both companies have expressed commitment to identifying further opportunities to promote digital inclusion across the continent. The agreement also opens pathways for SpaceX to leverage Airtel’s extensive ground network infrastructure and regional expertise throughout Africa.
Sunil Taldar, Airtel Africa’s Managing Director and CEO, emphasized the strategic importance of the partnership, saying, “This partnership with SpaceX is a significant step to demonstrate our continued commitment to advancing Africa’s digital economy through strategic investments and partnerships. Next-generation satellite connectivity will ensure that every individual, business, and community have reliable and affordable voice and data connectivity even in the most remote and currently under-served parts of Africa.”
The deal is a huge advancement in addressing connectivity challenges that have long hindered economic development in many African regions.
By combining Starlink’s advanced low Earth orbit satellite technology with Airtel’s established telecommunications infrastructure and customer base of over 156 million users, the partnership could overcome geographical barriers that have traditionally limited internet access.
SpaceX’s Starlink service, which utilizes a constellation of satellites in low Earth orbit, provides high-speed, low-latency internet capable of supporting data-intensive applications including video streaming, online gaming, and video conferencing, services that have previously been unavailable or unreliable in many parts of Africa.
Currently, Starlink operates in more than 20 African markets, and this new agreement with Airtel Africa will complement its direct consumer offerings.
