Samsung’s recent filings hint at the company being in the process of making its own protective glass. Currently, Corning’s Gorilla Glass is like the industry standard for smartphones and other devices. Samsung uses Gorilla Glass on almost all of its mobile and other devices and since it produces tens of millions of such every year, it is not much of a surprise that the company could be working hard behind the scenes to produce something similar or even better. It’s done it with processors where its own in-house Exynos chips have replaced Qualcomm’s Snapdragon processors on its 2015 flagship smartphones.
Named Turtle Glass as per the filings, it is not immediately clear when we’ll get to see the new protective glass on actual devices but if indeed it is a work in progress (and we have no reason to believe it is not) this will be what goes into Samsung’s extensive hardware lineup that includes anything from televisions to smartphones and smartwatches.
Since this news arrived at around the same time as filings of Samsung’s smartphone with a foldable display surfaced, is this a coincidence?
