How Technology Has Changed Education: Pros and Cons

No matter whether you think it’s good or bad, technology is evolving and has already become a huge part of our lives. We don’t spend a day without tech helping us wake up and showing how to get to destinations. It also distracts us from work and makes us buy eye drops to ease long-lasting screen hours.

In education, tech has become the largest change yet. It brings the same both sides by helping us structure education and distracting us from it. The thing is which side you focus on, useful or harmful? If you need more insight, here it is.

Advantages of Technology in Education

#1. Space for Pedagogical Experiments

By using technology, teachers can test new pedagogical methods and get instant feedback. Using online polls or tests during a lecture saves time in class. Besides, it provides feedback and suggestions from students.

The tests can show results in charts so the teacher can see the dynamics of attention and understanding of the topic. Electronic test results don’t need to be checked by hand unless there’s an error in the algorithm.

#2. Full Engagement and Participation

The same online polling or digital classrooms ensure all students participate in class. The analysis of their activity can show gaps in the knowledge that they have. By seeing this data, both students and teachers become aware of the problems and can solve them together.

Anonymous quizzes help all students participate in the life of their school. They don’t have to worry about their confidentiality, providing the school with honest feedback and suggestions.

Some schools experiment with gamification of classes, which promises to engage everyone. This method makes every class much more interesting and entertaining.

#3. Easier Learning

Students are quite familiar with technology, and this can aid in learning and achieving academic success. Here are some ways technology helps students succeed:

  • Online education ensures they get the needed materials even if they skipped class due to illness, work, or for other reasons;
  • A professional essay writing company can help in understanding how academic writing works and get students’ essays done when needed;
  • Educational platforms give access to learning material anywhere, anytime.

#4. Automating Tedious Tasks

Tracking student attendance and checking simple choice tests take a lot of focus. Automating them saves a lot of time and energy that can be directed to actual teaching.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is a great solution for tedious tasks. A great example of how AI can help both teachers and students is Jill Watson. It’s the AI assistant that can answer questions from students. She handles the problems according to her programming. And if the question is too specific or difficult, she transfers it to the professor, Ashok Goel, who developed her.

#5. Instant Updates and Easy Navigation

A lot of time and money is needed to update a textbook. But what if all the materials are digital? The updates can be made in a minute. The search for the needed information takes seconds.

Besides, by using a shared cloud, students can post comments and notes on the learning material in real-time. The supervising staff members can correct them and help enhance the comprehension of the topic.

Disadvantages of Technology in Education

#1. Tech Disconnects Social Interactions

By using technology to participate in classes, do homework, and engage in teamwork, people forget how to socialize. That’s why it’s recommended to make it a tool rather than the base of the classes.

There should be a balance between using devices and actual social communication to learn and solve problems. Using technology will save time and make studying more convenient. And the social interaction part will prevent students from losing the skill.

#2. People Don’t Have Equal Access to Tech

Not everyone can afford an expensive device or enough Internet traffic. The financial inequality can hinder the successful integration of technological resources. The schools that decide to fully implement the benefits of digitalization into their classes should provide students in need with the necessary tech.

If it’s troublesome, there must be a solution for every subject. Sharing devices, providing the same materials on paper, etc. It’s also a good idea to create groups of students that can’t use devices as a part of their education process.

#3. The Quality of Materials Found Online May Be Poor

When researching a topic online, students have to be cautious and check the information they read. Not all articles are of good quality; not all services provide good samples and recommendations.

Online sources can still be used for successful academic performance. But you should check them for authenticity and trustworthiness.

#4. Devices Are a Distraction

Engaging e-textbook filled with useful tools isn’t enough for quality education. Students have to focus on the lesson and be encouraged to learn something. If a person doesn’t want to learn, they will look for other uses of their devices.

Social media and games are major distractors when it comes to studying. You can choose to scroll your Instagram feed instead of commenting on the lecture in the cloud.

Make Use of the Change

As you can see technology affects education positively and negatively today. Technological progress has become a huge part of our lives, and to some extent, our day-to-day tasks depend on it. So, even if you’re not ready to fully embrace this change, try to make use of it. Your devices and online help services can improve the quality of your education if you choose to use it for that.
