It is the end of 2020 and companies are releasing data right left center of what their users have been upto this year.

Google has released the trending searches made by Kenyans in 2020 after releasing what Kenyans were watching on YouTube this year. “The 2020 Year in Search lists not only reveal the most popular trends from the past 12 months, but also give insight into the biggest events in the news, politics, sports, entertainment and popular lockdown trends,” Dorothy Ooko, Head of Communications and Public Affairs for Africa said.

You would think that the COVID-19 pandemic would be at the top of search results in Kenya but that is far from the truth. The truth is, people love football and elections and those took the top slots.

The English Premier League and the US Elections took the first and second spots respectively. Search queries on football clubs in the Premier League dominated the trend where they seeked to know the league standings, fixtures and results. Regarding the US elections, Kenyans followed keenly where they compared it with their own and searched for updates and results for both President Trump and the President elect, Joe Biden. Third on the list was thank you coronavirus helpers. When Google published Doodles for two weeks to thank coronavirus frontline workers.
