Huawei’s CEO and Founder, Ren Zhenfei has called on the new US administration to come up with more open policies for trade.
“Trade benefits both sides. Allowing US companies to supply goods to Chinese customers is conducive to their own financial performance. If Huawei’s production capacity expands, US companies could us sell more. It’s a win-win situation. I believe the new administration will weigh these interests as they consider their policies,” he said.
Ren said that Huawei creates value to the ecosystem and the wider economy where he gave an example of how iPhone 12 with 5G capabilities can use their 5G networks in many cities in Europe.
“The fact high-end users can use the iPhone 12 to its fullest effect on our 5G networks in Europe is a testament to the quality of our networks,” he said. ““As humanity keeps making progress, no company can develop a globalized industry alone. It requires concerted efforts around the world.”
These were his first public remarks after the regime change in the US. He was speaking during the launch of the intelligent Mining Innovation lab in Taiyuan.
Huawei’s founder also reiterated the company’s focus on research and development during the launch of the mining innovation lab. He said that new strategies include research and development and enabling digital transformation with their own core ICT capabilities.
“By supporting the mining industry, we can grow our business and support more efficient and safer production in mines. We can also enable coal mine workers to ‘wear suits and ties’ at work” Ren said. “In the 5G era, connecting businesses is the main goal. There are many industries that we are not too familiar with, like airports, ports, coal mining, iron and steel production, automotive manufacturing, and aircraft manufacturing. That’s why we built joint labs to learn more about the needs of these industries.” he said.
Huawei had a difficult 2019 thanks to the trade walls set up by the US government by placing the company on the entity list. This led them not to conduct business with American companies and in 2020 we saw the full effect of this by them plummeting down the smartphone shipments statistics. However, this has become a blessing in disguise as they have invested in their own ecosystem with HMS and Harmony OS.
