Today KenGen and Konza Technopolis Development Authority (KoTDA) joined forces with local investors in breaking ground for an Ecocloud Data Centre at the KenGen Green Energy Park. This initiative sets the stage for sustainable and clean industrialization.
Ecocloud Data Centre is KenGen’s Green park first client. The data centre will be powered by 100% Geothermal Energy. KenGen says this will be Africa’s first data centre fully powered by geothermal energy.
Hence, the government says this is further proof that the country is focussed on sustainable growth. In addition, it is envisioned the Olkaria Ecocloud Data Centre will transform tech advancements across Africa.
The event was attended by Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, Cabinet Secretary for East Africa Community, Rebecca Miano ,Eliud Owalo of ICT, and Davis Chirchir the cabinet secretary for Energy. They were all present during the ground breaking for Eco Cloud data centre
The energy CS Mr. Chirchir indicated the data centre will buy power directly from KenGen at 7 cents USD. The green data centre is expected to have a consumption of 70Mw.
In addition, the event was graced by private companies including: Jamii Telecom , Amazon Web Services, and Google among others.
KenGen Green Energy Park Environmental Conscious
Notably, this move indicates the power producer is moving towards environmentally conscious growth. KenGen has indicated it is aligning its innovations around environmentally sustainable technology.
“The partnership with KoTDA and the initiation of the KenGen Green Energy Park represents the first step towards a new era of industrialization, one that places environmental sustainability at its core.” KenGen Board Chairman, Julius MIGOS Ogamba said.
The Green Energy Park is located at KenGen’s geothermal power generation hub. The Green Energy Park will host both industrial and non-industrial business activities. This means, due to its strategic location it will provide industrial, commercial, and recreational facilities.
This makes the park a blend of nature, fun, and energy investments.
