Infinix, a tech brand targeting young consumers, has introduced E-Color Shift 2.0, the first AI-powered color-changing back cover technology for smartphones. This innovation allows users to customize their phone’s appearance dynamically, reflecting emotions and weather conditions from chosen images.
E-Color Shift 2.0 builds upon its predecessor with three major upgrades:
- Internal Battery Power: The technology now draws power from the phone’s internal battery, enabling on-the-go customization.
- 3D Four-Curved Back Cover: A sleek design compatible with a wider range of phone models, bringing the concept closer to mass production.
- Expanded Color-Shifting Zones: The number of customizable zones has increased nearly tenfold to 46, allowing for more intricate and personalized designs.
E-Color Shift 2.0 Core Technology
E-Color Shift 2.0 is powered by the Prism3S diaphragm. This micro-structural system uses pigment particles with positive and negative charges that respond to voltage changes, producing different colors across 46 independent zones. This enables E-Color Shift 2.0 to incorporate several AI-driven capabilities, including:
- AI Color Matching: Analyzes dominant hues in user-selected photos and translates them to the back cover.
- AI Weather Response: Detects weather conditions in images and creates abstract color representations.
- AI Emotion Matching: Identifies facial expressions in portrait photos and applies corresponding colors and patterns.
Weiqi Nie, the Product Director at Infinix, explained the importance of this new tech, stating:
“Infinix’s latest innovation addresses the growing demand for personalization and self-expression among young consumers globally. Traditionally, customization was limited to front-screen wallpapers, while the back relied on fixed phone cases. Infinix’s new tech breaks this barrier with a color-shifting battery cover. Using AI, the phone’s back cover changes colors and patterns based on selected photos. It extracts emotions or weather from the image and reflects them in abstract designs across 46 customizable zones. This fusion of technology and art enables radical combinations, making future smartphones truly unique.”
Color-shifting tech in smartphones has been evolving, with two main categories: passive (non-electrically driven) and active (electrically driven). Infinix has been at the forefront of both, introducing innovations such as:
- 2021: Dual color-changing back cover using electrochromic and electroluminescent technologies in the Infinix Concept Phone.
- 2022: Light-Painting Leather technology, advancing photochromic capabilities.
- Early 2024: E-Color Shift 1.0, laying the groundwork for the current iteration.
E-Color Shift 2.0 is a major step towards mass-producing fully customizable smartphone rear panels. Integrating AI with innovative hardware will enable Infinix to satisfy the demands of younger users who seek fluid self-expression through their devices. The new technology not only enhances aesthetic customization but also adds practical value for everyday use.
