In a move set to bolster Kenya’s position as a hub for technological innovation, Konza Technopolis has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Kenya Industrial Property Institute (KIPI). The partnership aims to establish the Konza Technology and Innovation Support Center (TISC). TISC will empower startups and innovators with vital intellectual property (IP) and commercialization support.

The TISC will serve as a vital resource for startups and researchers. It will provide free access to expert guidance on intellectual property registration, technology transfer, and commercialization. Speaking at the signing ceremony, Konza CEO John Paul Okwiri highlighted the transformative potential of the initiative.

“This MOU will allow us to support innovation, entrepreneurship, and technology commercialization by providing crucial services and resources to innovators and researchers. It will help bridge the gap between innovation and market entry.”

KIPI, as Kenya’s authoritative body on intellectual property, brings its extensive expertise in patenting, trademark registration, and IP education to the collaboration.

KIPI CEO John Ochieng emphasized the importance of accessible services for local innovators, stating:
“We are bringing our expertise in IP management, patenting, trademark registration, and commercialization strategies to guide local innovators and businesses toward maximizing the value of their intellectual property assets.”

Transformative Impact on Local Startups

Their partnership will bring the following benefits;

  • IP Protection Made Easy:. Startups will gain access to resources and guidance to safeguard their innovations, ensuring they remain competitive locally and globally.
  • Practical Training:. Entrepreneurs will receive training on patent processes and commercialization strategies, equipping them with the tools to grow their businesses effectively.
  • World-Class Facilities:. With access to Konza Technopolis’ modern facilities, startups can develop ideas into real products. Benefiting from innovation hubs and incubation centers.

A Free, Inclusive Approach to Innovation

All services provided by the TISC will be offered at no cost . This will ensure that innovators can access essential support to safeguard and commercialize their ideas. Moreover, this aims to spark a surge of groundbreaking innovations across Kenya, fostering a vibrant and globally competitive technology ecosystem.

This partnership between Konza Technopolis and KIPI represents a bold step forward in Kenya’s journey toward becoming a global technology leader. Konza TISC will play a key role in supporting startups and innovators by encouraging creativity, protecting their intellectual property, and helping them bring their ideas to market. Additionally, this initiative is set to create positive changes not just for businesses at Konza, but for innovation across Kenya.
