Microsoft is actively encouraging users to upgrade to Windows 11, updating its support pages to emphasize the benefits of its latest operating system.
This initiative comes as Windows 10 approaches its end-of-support date on October 14, 2025, after which security updates and technical assistance will no longer be provided.
Since its launch in October 2021, Windows 11 has seen a gradual increase in adoption. As of August 2024, Windows 11 accounted for nearly 32% of Windows installations worldwide, up from 23% in July 2023.
Despite this growth, Windows 10 remains the dominant version, holding approximately 64% of the Windows market share as of 2024.
One notable area where Windows 11 has gained significant traction is among PC gamers. In August 2024, Windows 11 surpassed Windows 10 as the most popular operating system among Steam users, with 49% of users running Windows 11 compared to 47% on Windows 10.
Microsoft’s emphasis on Windows 11’s enhanced security features is a key component of its upgrade campaign.
The operating system requires TPM 2.0 (Trusted Platform Module), which provides hardware-based security, and includes advanced security protocols designed to protect against modern cyber threats.
Microsoft warns that continuing to use older operating systems beyond their support dates could expose users to increased security risks.
In addition to security improvements, Windows 11 offers performance enhancements and new features aimed at improving user experience. These include a redesigned Start menu, improved multitasking capabilities with Snap Layouts, and seamless integration with Microsoft Teams.
The Windows Update process has also been optimized to be more efficient and less disruptive.
Despite these advancements, some users and organizations are hesitant to upgrade due to hardware compatibility issues, software compatibility concerns, and a preference for the familiarity of Windows 10.
Microsoft’s stringent system requirements for Windows 11, such as the need for newer processors and TPM 2.0, mean that many older PCs are not eligible for the upgrade without hardware modifications or replacements.
As the end-of-support date for Windows 10 approaches, Microsoft is expected to intensify its efforts to encourage users to transition to Windows 11. This may include more aggressive messaging, potential incentives, or policy changes to facilitate the upgrade process.
Users who choose to remain on Windows 10 post-October 2025 will need to consider alternative security measures or face potential vulnerabilities due to the lack of official support.
As the deadline approaches, both individual users and organizations will need to evaluate the risks and benefits associated with remaining on an unsupported operating system versus upgrading to Windows 11.
