Google is set to roll out Android 16 Beta 3 on March 13, marking a major milestone in the development cycle known as Platform Stability.
This update finalizes core APIs and system behaviors, allowing developers to fine-tune their apps ahead of the stable release expected in June 2025.
While Android 16 Beta 3 focuses on refining system stability, it also builds on several user-facing features introduced in earlier betas. Here are the standout changes:
- Google Wallet Quick Launch: Users can now double-press the power button to launch Google Wallet, offering a faster way to access payment options. This replaces the Pixel Camera shortcut by default.
- “Extra Dim” Setting: An integrated brightness control reduces screen brightness below the usual minimum, improving visibility in low-light environments and offering a more comfortable viewing experience.
- Regional Preferences: A new settings section
Settings > System > Languages & region
allows users to select custom regional preferences like measurement units, date formats, and number systems. - User Switcher Widget: Android 16 now includes a home screen widget that makes switching between user profiles quicker and more intuitive, ideal for devices shared by multiple people.
- Visual Tweaks: Google has promised fixes to visual regressions from Beta 2, including the background color inconsistency in the Settings app.
Platform Stability
Platform stability means that Android 16’s underlying system behaviors and APIs are now finalized. This is a crucial phase for developers, as any major changes must be included by this point.
It allows app creators to focus on compatibility testing and optimizing performance without worrying about further disruptions.
Google plans to release Android 16 Beta 4 in April 2025, which will serve as the release candidate for final testing. There may be additional small updates before the official rollout of Android 16 in June 2025.
If you’re part of the Android Beta Program, you will be able to download Beta 3 via an over-the-air update starting today, March 13. As with any pre-release software, it’s advisable to back up your data before installation to avoid potential data loss.
Stay tuned for further updates as Android 16 approaches its final release, promising new capabilities and improved user experiences across devices.
