WhatsApp has introduced a new translation feature for Android beta users, aimed at enhancing communication across different languages. This update is part of the WhatsApp beta version 2.25.12.25 and will be gradually rolled out to more beta users in the coming weeks.
The translation feature supports several languages, including Spanish, Arabic, Portuguese, Hindi, and Russian. It operates entirely on-device, meaning it does not require an internet connection to function. This approach enhances user privacy by keeping translations local to the device. To use the feature, users need to download a specific language pack. An additional pack is available for automatic language detection, allowing incoming messages to be translated without manual language selection.
Users can activate automatic translation for individual or group chats through the chat info screen. They can select a preferred language for translation on a per-chat basis. Alternatively, messages can be translated manually by selecting the “Translate” option within the message menu.
While the use of on-device translation increases privacy, it may not provide the same level of accuracy as cloud-based translation services. This limitation stems from the use of lightweight language packs designed to minimise processing and storage requirements. To improve translation quality over time, WhatsApp has included a feedback option. Users can rate the translation accuracy without submitting the original or translated content, preserving message confidentiality.
This feature reflects WhatsApp’s ongoing focus on making cross-language communication more seamless while maintaining strong privacy protections. As the update continues to reach more users, it is expected to support more dynamic and accessible interactions among individuals who speak different languages.
