WhatsApp is developing a new AI-powered writing assistant aimed at helping users craft and respond to messages more easily.
The feature, which is still under development and testing, will allow users to request writing assistance directly within their chat interface.
Instead of struggling with tone, grammar, or clarity, users will be able to tap an AI icon after typing a draft. The assistant will then suggest rewrites, offer grammar corrections, and even change the tone to suit different contexts, such as formal, casual, or humorous.
The AI writing feature builds on WhatsApp’s larger integration of Meta’s AI technology. Earlier this year, the app began rolling out Meta AI for chatbot interactions, image generation, and in-chat assistance.
The writing assistant appears to be an extension of this direction. In the current beta version, a pencil icon appears next to the send button once a message is typed.
Tapping it triggers the assistant to rewrite the text with several tone options, including shorter, supportive, and sarcastic.
In addition to this writing tool, WhatsApp is exploring more advanced AI functions such as private two-way voice conversations with AI and direct image editing through text prompts.
These developments are designed to create a more intuitive and capable messaging experience. Importantly, WhatsApp is also introducing a new privacy layer called Private Processing.
This ensures that when users invoke AI tools like summarisation or writing suggestions, their content remains encrypted and inaccessible to both Meta and its servers.
The AI writing assistant is one of several features under development. Others include chat summaries, AI-focused tabs within the app, and customizable chatbot avatars.
Meta has been clear that these WhatsApp tools are entirely optional. Users can choose to enable or ignore them, depending on their preferences.
