Renowned radio personality Edward Carey Kwach passed away yesterday night while receiving treatment for meningitis at a Nairobi hospital. The family spokesperson, Michael Okwiri, confirmed his death in a statement released earlier this morning.
“It is with profound sadness that we announce the untimely passing of our beloved son and brother, Carey, who passed away last night while receiving treatment for meningitis,” the statement read.
At the time of his passing, Kwach was hosting the Spice Drive show on Spice FM, an affiliate of the Standard Media Group, where he entertained listeners weekdays from 3 pm to 7 pm.
His career spanned several major stations, including Capital FM, Homeboyz Radio, Kiss FM, EA FM, Nation FM, and Urban Radio in Kisumu, where he co-hosted the breakfast show with Chris Okinda and Brian Oduor.
Kwach originally pursued law before transitioning to media in the early 2000s, where he quickly established himself as an entertaining presence on Kenyan airwaves.
His family noted that he “touched the lives of many through his voice and presence on the airwaves, becoming a trusted and familiar companion to listeners across the country.”
Prior to his death, Edward Kwach had been hospitalized for approximately two weeks, during which time a public appeal was made for blood donations.
“We are deeply grateful for the outpouring of support during his illness, particularly to those who donated blood, visited, and kept him in their thoughts and prayers,” the family expressed.
Fellow media personalities paid tribute to Kwach following news of his passing. Radio presenter Nick Odhiambo, who was also Kwach’s cousin, remembered him as “a trailblazer in the radio industry” who brought joy to countless Kenyans.
Sports presenter Carol Radull called his death “heartbreaking,” while radio personality Maina Kageni described Kwach as “the greatest radio personality Kenya has ever produced.”
Kwach was widely admired for his warmth, humor, and exceptional taste in music, all qualities that endeared him to his listeners throughout his career.
The family announced that funeral arrangements are underway, with further details to be provided in due course.
