TikTok has launched “AI Alive,” a new feature that allows users to animate still photos into short video clips using artificial intelligence.
The tool is available through TikTok Stories and is designed to give users a simple way to enhance static images with motion and visual effects.
The process is relatively straightforward: users select a photo, enter a short prompt, such as the default “make this photo come alive”, and the AI generates a short animated video.
The output typically lasts a few seconds, and while the feature can create subtle, atmospheric changes like moving hair or shifting light, it currently has limitations. For example, it cannot fulfil niche requests such as turning an image into an anime-style video.
TikTok says the tool is meant to democratise video creation, giving more users the ability to produce dynamic content without needing editing skills.
However, the company has also placed significant emphasis on safety and transparency. Every photo, prompt, and resulting video goes through an initial review before the content appears in a user’s Story draft. A second review is triggered if the user chooses to publish it.
To distinguish AI-generated content from regular videos, TikTok adds clear labels and embeds metadata using the C2PA (Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity) standard.
This information remains attached to the file even if it’s shared outside the app, which is part of a wider push for responsible AI use in media.
AI Alive fits into TikTok’s broader strategy of integrating generative tools into its content ecosystem. While the feature opens up creative possibilities, its current form appears more experimental than transformative.
