The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has made a historical decision to vote for creation of new website domain suffixes.
Rod Beckstrom, ICANN’s president and chief executive officer said “ICANN has opened the Internet’s naming system to unleash the global human imagination. Today’s decision respects the rights of groups to create new Top Level Domains in any language or script. We hope this allows the domain name system to better serve all of mankind”
According to Wikipedia, A top-level domain (TLD) is one of the domains at the highest level in the hierarchical Domain Name System of the Internet.
Benefits
What does this entail for public and private business/organisation! What this mean is that Techweez can now be able to acquire its own generic Top Level Domain such as .techweez. After acquiring it, Techweez can use the domain name to market its products & services e.g. seo.techweez, blogger.techweez, business.techweez, mobile.techweez, realestate.techweez etc.
Requirements
To acquire a generic top-level domain, Techweez will be required to pay ICANN $185,000 or Ksh. 15,725,000 and show that it has technical capabilities to run .techweez. Techweez will also have to fill out the application form which is 360 pages long.
The challenge might arise in security and stability of the domain but ICANN will take this into consideration when reviewing the application. The application process will begin from 12 January 2012 to 12 April 2012.
