While others are debating on whether to allow flight mode set mobile phones on planes, Emirates offers a first: inflight mobile phone service. This is available on the A380 aircraft and passengers can make calls, send/receive text messages and also access data services as usual on their phones and personal devices using EDGE/GPRS connections.
The A380 equipped with full suite OnAir connectivity left Dubai international Airport to Munich International Airport on 2nd October and the first recorded inflight call was placed to China at 11,500 metres cruise across the Gulf. The OnAir mobile system will be available on all future A380 deliveries and will be retro-fit to Emirates current fleet of 25 A380 aircraft.
