Kenya will play host to the second edition of the Vodafone Appstar Challenge where winners stand a chance to take home the grand prize of $12,000. Developers from Soth Africa, Egypt, Kenya, Tanzania and India will battle it out for the honours in the competition that runs in two phases (a national phase and an international phase). The national phase runs up to 22nd November while the international phase takes place in December of this year.
Participants are expected to develop Android, Java/Symbian, Windows Phone or iOS applications that address challenges faced in the fields of for instance health, education, finance, agriculture and the like by providing solutions. The categories to develop for include education, health, Agriculture, Financial Inclusion, Games and Productivity.
The overall winner in the international phase will win the grand prize of $12,000 while the first and second runners up will take home $6,000 and $4,000 respectively. There will also be other prizes worth of prizes of $3,000 worth of smartphones and tablets.
The top three overall winners will take home an iPhone 5 and iPads. Winners with the best Java Application, best User Interface, and the most Practical Application among others will take home other high-end devices from Safaricom.
