Samsung on Tuesday announced that the electronics company will donate 3000 smartphone worth USD 1 million to aid in the fight against Ebola. The donation will be made through the United Nations office for use in the three worst hit countries by Ebola; Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.
How will these help?
Well, the smartphones will be secifically for use by medical staff in the clinics to treat the patients. The smartphones will be installed with United Nation’s Smart Health Pro mobile application that will then be used to collect medical data. These will be used strictly within the quarantined area and quarantined patients will also be able to contact their families using the smartphones.
The smartphones will be destroyed as soon as the virus outbreak is contained. Samsung is also giving financia l support in Ghana and the Democratic Republic of Congo for purchase of hazmat suits and hand sanitizers, and an Ebola information SMS service launched in South Africa.
