Stephen Elop unveils the Lumia 640XL at MWC2015

Microsoft today unveiled the replacement to the Lumia 1320 phablet, The Lumia 640XL.  This device was unintentionally leaked by Microsoft on the day before launch, it presents a welcome departure in Nokia’s naming convention. Though a fantastic device, the numbering of the Lumia 1320 confused customers as it suggest it was a device with better specs than the Lumia Flagships at the time (Lumia 925, Lumia 1020). It appears that Microsoft has followed some of the recommendations we suggested on making the Lumia product range easier to understand.

The Lumia 640XL will be launched with Windows Phone 8.1 (Update 1), but will also be be fully upgradeable to Microsoft’s next operating system, Windows 10  later in 2015. Comparing the specs of the Lumia 640XL to the previous generation Lumia 1320, it is evident that Microsoft is aggressively cascading high end features to lower price points. The Lumia 640XL comes with a whopping 13MP rear camera (that will support all the innovative imaging features first seen in Lumia Denim), 5.7″ 1280×720 screen, and a 3000mAH battery.

The Lumia 640XL will enable you to do more, and achieve more.

Starting in April 2015, the Lumia 640XL will be available globally in both single SIM and dual SIM versions as well as 3G and LTE version at the following prices (before taxes and subsidies):

  • 3G 189 Euros, 211 US Dollars, KES 19,334
  • 3G 219 Euros, 244 US Dollars, KES 22,403

Microsoft envisions the Lumia 640 and Lumia 640 XL as great devices for enterprise with features such as Office, Outlook OneDrive and Skype. As such, both devices will come with a free 1 year subscription to Office 365. This package will include:

  • Office 365 license installable on one PC (Windows or Mac) and one tablet (Android, iOS or Windows)
  • 1 Terabyte of online storage on OneDrive
  • 60 minutes per month of Skype World.
