In what could be an interesting turn of events, Microsoft could be re-positioning it’s product naming. Latiff Cherono did a long form article demystifying Microsoft naming for Lumia smartphones. And he raised a very valid point. Why was Lumia 1320, a mid ranger given such a huge name? You know the higher the numbers at Lumia the cooler it becomes. That isn’t the case for Lumia 1320.
Not that it’s a bad device, in fact it’s a very good one, but it’s a mid-ranger and placed next to the Lumia 1020 and Lumia 930 you will realize the other two are higher up the food chain. Now Latiff felt that Lumia 1320’s successor needed to come back to where it belongs. This looks like it could be the case should what seems to be a leaked header come to reality.
Microsoft is expected to release a Lumia 1320 successor, for sometime it was naturally expected to be Lumia 1330, but that might not be the case. This is because there is a leak, (plausible mistake), or well laid out teaser on the Microsoft website. Whatever the case, we can now rest assured there will be a Lumia 640 and Lumia 640 XL.
The Lumia 640 naturally looks like the successor to Lumia 630, this mid ranger (Lumia 6XX series) is getting iterated as fast as the Lumia 5XX series. While Lumia 640 XL could end up being what we have expected to be the super-size Lumia. By it sitting pretty at the 6XX series then this means the specs sheet will reflect it’s position in the food chain, while XL means it could be 6 inch, like Lumia 1320 has been.
Should this happen, then this will mean Lumia 1320 gets a successor while the Lumia 1520 sits behind with Lumia 1020 among Lumia devices that do not get iterated fast. There has been talk of the Pureview flagship not getting revised, at least for now, and Lumia 1520 could get into that purgatory as well. So we wait to see what new thing we can fetch from Redmond at Mobile World Congress. Shall we?
