Peter Chou has been HTC CEO for 11 years now and has seen the rise, fall and steady rise again of HTC wich started as a hardware manufacturer of components for other brands. He has been there when HTC was a pioneer in Android smartphone business and seen other players rise again to give the company a back seat in the business. A stint that saw the company bleed money for many seasons. HTC went on to be innovative with the One series of device and captured hearts of smartphone consumers, enthusiasts and critics.
It is at this point that Peter Chou has seen it best to leave the helm of the Taiwanese company. He leaves HTC chairperson Cher Wang, a lady to head HTC with whom Peter co-founded HTC in 1997. Peter Chou doesn’t leave operations totally and will be staying to head the “HTC Future Development Lab”, something many of us call research and development.
“As an entrepreneur at heart, I am excited to see so many new opportunities, and I am honoured to accept this opportunity to help shape the next stage of HTC’s development,” said Cher Wang, who highlighted HTC’s connected living products in her statement.
The switch comes quite close after the launch of HTC One M9 at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona that was great but not as innovative as the previous changes of flagship devices were. The changeover between the two has been gradual as Cher has been taking over some roles with time.
This means that we will see a woman head things and appear at product launches from now onwards. Samsung recently received applause for the number of women appearing at their product launches, a statement that would go on to set the pace for smartphone companies. As you may know there has been a drive the world over to get more women in tech. This really stands at the front together with Oracle and Yahoo.
