Telkom Kenya has, for the most part, been striving to increase its mobile subscriptions. The number of products, promotions, and campaigns under its sleeve are substantial, and this makes sense for a telco that is on track to reclaim its lost glory that was at one time tied to landlines.
Statistics from Kenya’s ICT watchdog show a 4.4 percent rise in mobile subscriptions from 41.0 million to 42.8 million for the first quarter of the 2017/2018. While Safaricom’s subscriptions dipped slightly, Telkom netted 0.6 percent points to register a market share of 9.0 percent, making it the third largest mobile telecoms operator after Safaricom and Airtel Networks Limited.
To keep these numbers up, Telkom launched the #FormNi50 campaign. The promo, which will close on April 27, gives out a car every day (Monday to Friday) for users who amass a substantial amount of points when topping up. The details of the point system are highlighted in this launch post.
We managed to reach out to last week’s winners, who, unsurprisingly, did not expect to win a Toyota Belta.
James Ndung’u, a 57-year old Nairobi resident says he was surprised after Telkom Kenya reached out to him. James, whose line of work is Mjengo, tops up his line every day as his line of work requires constant phone calls. His car is already on the road for business purposes. At the same time, his son, who works in a paints company, uses the car to transport lightweight parts to and from his hardware. Ndung’u mentions that his family members have shifted to Telkom in the hope of winning a car – which is still possible as the campaign is still ongoing.
We also had a chat with Faith Kagwira Bernard who operates a Kiosk in Malindi, Coast Kenya. Faith uses Telkom as her primary SIM for communication as she also makes a lot of phone calls with her customers. She also mentioned that her family uses the telco’s services owing to its pocket-friendly prices that are distributed multiple products. Lastly, she says the car will come in handy in replenishing her shop’s stock.
We will keep reaching out to Toyota Belta winners and share their stories before the promotion ends.
