Which ISP is best in Kenya

Faiba, the Kenyan internet service provider operated by Jamii Telecommunications Limited (JTL), is currently offering the best fixed internet performance in the country.

The ISP leads in Wi-Fi quality and download speeds at 33.1 Mbps. It also offers the best browsing experience with 39.3%, ensuring quick webpage loading.

With strong upload speeds of 29.7 Mbps and solid video streaming quality at 69.7%, Faiba provides a well-rounded internet experience.

With 418,309 subscribers to its services, the company currently has the second highest customer base in Kenya and holds a 22.5% market share. It is the second year in a row the service provider has topped this list.

According to the latest report by French internet monitoring company nPerf, Safaricom is second in terms of download speeds with 29 Mbps. The ISP’s upload speeds of 21.42 Mbps place it third in this metric, just behind Zuku’s 22.76 Mbps.

Download speed measures how fast data comes from the internet to your device, which is crucial for things like streaming videos or downloading files.

Conversely, upload speed indicates how quickly data goes from your device to the internet, which is important for tasks such as sending emails with attachments or posting videos.

Safaricom Leads in Streaming

Safaricom delivers the best YouTube streaming performance in Kenya, a crucial advantage on a platform with just under 10 million users in the country.

Generally, a score of 75% or higher is recommended for streaming. Only Safaricom was close with 72.07%, while Faiba (69.74%) and Zuku (69.28%) followed.

Notably, in the last year, streaming performance on the Mawingu network has sharply declined.

Zuku boasts of the country’s lowest average broadband latency, clocking in at 41.80 milliseconds. However, this is a drop from last year’s 39 milliseconds.

Latency is a measure of how quickly your internet connection reacts. You can compare it with waiting in a queue – a shorter wait time (lower latency) means you can interact with content faster.

Good latency, measuring between 31 and 100 milliseconds, ensures a smooth internet experience with minimal delay. Fortunately for Kenyan users, all four ISPs featured offer reasonable latency.

Overall, Faiba is Kenya’s top internet provider according to the nPerf score, which comprehensively evaluates internet quality based on measured bitrates, latency, and Quality of Experience (QoE) tests. Safaricom and Zuku follow closely, achieving nearly identical scores.
