Well, nobody saw this coming. With growing smartphone competition especially in China, it’s strange that three smartphone brands are teaming up to launch a cross-platform Airdrop alternative. OPPO, Vivo and Xiaomi partnering up will come in handy for users in the end.
How it will work
The peer-to-peer protocol will let users transfer files by Bluetooth between Xiaomi, OPPO and Vivo similar to Apple’s Airdrop that allows file transfers between Apple devices.
It’s not like we haven’t had an Airdrop alternative. Android had Android Beam which was an NFC file transfer feature but since it being killed off in Android Q, the Airdrop alternative for these companies will help fill that blank, sort of.
The good thing is that Xiaomi is welcoming other smartphone companies to adopt the file-sharing protocol.
The beta version is going to be available at the end of this month.
