New data regarding sector statistics from ICT watchdog the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) has arrived. The information has been reviewed for the third quarter of the 2020/2021 FY, which started from April 2021 to June 2021.

There are several elements that have been discussed in the report, but first, let’s look into Kenya’s mobile subscriptions.

At the end of June 2021, Kenya had 64.4 million active mobile subscriptions. This is the same as saying that there are 64.4 million active SIM cards in Kenya.

This is 2.4 million more SIM cards that were recorded at the end of the previous quarter.

Effectively, mobile penetration has grown to 132.2 percent, a 1.5 percent jump from the preceding quarter.

So, what led to the net addition in the number of active SIM cards?

Well, the major reason is that Safaricom pushed a campaign named Welcome to Safaricom 4G that ran from March to mid-June.

The leading carrier has been busy trying to onboard as many new customers to its products and services as possible, one of them being the appeal of its LTE services that it hopes will cover the whole country in the near future.

Did a combined total of about 100kms in the Amboseli wilderness and there was 4G network coverage every step of the way. Heck, one of us even managed to pick up a 5G signal from one of the test sites nearby. Impressed.

The campaign promised first-time customers buying a 4G SIM card and a 4G-capable phone 2GB of data every month during the promotion period.

At the same time, the quarter was assessed at a time when students were at home who likely reactivated their SIM cards.

Other key insights from the report are as follows:

  • Airtel Kenta market share rose by 0.3 percent to 26.9 percent.
  • Equitel market share dropped by 0.2 percent to 2.3 percent.
  • Telkom Kenya’s market share remained the same at 6.2 percent.
  • JTL’s market share remained the same at 0.3 percent.
