Google search trends in Kenya show that the Forest road video, Winter paralympics, KCPE results 2022, International Women’s Day, and Vladimir Putin Russia Ukraine war topped March searches.

Forest road viral video

On 7th March, video surfaced online capturing boda boda riders assaulting a lady diplomat involved in a road scuffle with a boda boda operator. The lady had allegedly knocked one of the boda boda operators. Kenyans took to the online platforms to recount nasty experiences at the hands of rogue boda boda riders. The public uproar including tweets from top government officials saw 16 bodaboda riders arrested and apprehended.

President Uhuru Kenyatta ordered a national crackdown requiring boda boda riders to be subjected to fresh registration. The incident that was first on the most searched items happened on the eve of the International Women’s Day (IWD).

Russia-Ukraine war

Winter paralympics and the Vladimir Putin Russia Ukraine war were second and fifth in the trends. The paralympics took place in Beijing, China between March 4 and March 13, 2022.

In March 23, Russian president Vladimir Putin announced a special military operation in Ukraine. Sources say that the ‘operation’ was meant to prevent Ukraine from joining NATO alliance. It has left thousands of citizens dead and millions displaced in Ukraine.

KCPE 2022 results

KCPE 2022 results emerged third on the trends. On Monday 28th, the Education Cabinet Secretary announced the results for the recently concluded 2021 KCPE exams. Magata Bruce Mackenzie from Gilgil Hills Academy emerged the top student with 428 marks. This is the second-last cohort in the 8-4-4 curriculum. Kenyan education system is about to fully transition into the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC). The school calendar in Kenya which has been severely altered due to COVID-19 is expected to be restored to normalcy by 2023.

Others

Sixth and seventh respectively on the list were Women’s Cricket World Cup and World Cup qualifiers. The ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup is the sport’s oldest world championship, with the first tournament held in England in 1973. Australia were dumped out at this stage by India five years ago. However, they have dominated the women’s game ever since then. Currently, Australia has bagged into the final of the Women’s World Cup with a 157-run dismantling of West Indies in Wellington. The 2022 men’s World Cup will take place in Qatar and will feature 32 teams before the field expands to 48 teams for the 2026 World Cup.

Sultana, the latest series on Kenya’s Citizen TV comes in eighth on the list as it replaces Zora. The show airs daily from Monday to Friday between 7.30 to 8.00 pm. It features Lolani Kalu who retired as a news reporter on NTV television playing as ‘Babu”. Closing the list was Coleus tricolour and Jah Cure respectively. The Coleus plant is also known as Painted Nettle. It is often grown outdoors but can survive indoors if there is sufficient bright light
