If there is one thing that never gets old, it is animation. This is something that everyone loves, whether you are a young child that loves the vibrancy of animation or adults that like to experience new stories and imagery. Animation is a movie type that is here to stay and keeps on getting bigger and better.

Namely, we are talking about Sony Picture Imageworks and how it continues to release ground-breaking animation. In particular, it has teamed up with Netflix for the release of The Mitchells Vs. The Machines. Let’s take a closer look at what is happening here.

The Story and Its Creation

First of all, what is The Mitchells Vs. The Machines all about? Well, this is an interesting story that centers around a father and his daughter that is going to be heading to college. In particular, it explores their relationship through a time when an AI system is trying to take over the world as we know it. This is a show that explores many different themes and creates a futuristic story. Indeed, it was inspired by the magic that was brought to life by Spider-Verse. This was a series that proved popular and led to new tools and technology being used when it came to animation. So, when it came to creating The Mitchells Vs. The Machines, everybody has to put their thinking caps on and explore new ways to entertain the audience.

New Approaches

Animation is evolving and we can see that in The Mitchells Vs. The Machines. In order to create this story, a combination of 2D sketches were used, as well as 3D animation. It was like bringing paintings and sketches to life. In particular, the team analyzed real paintings and used new tools in order to create a unique animation. Indeed, they dared to be creative and had to be bold with their approach since they wanted to be different. In particular, if you look at Spider-Verse, its creation was ink-inspired linkwork. This is in contrast to The Mitchells Vs. The Machines since it takes on a watercolor marker.

If you are a creator yourself, there is a lot of inspiration you can draw from the work at The Mitchells Vs. The Machines. For example, you can use VFX software and see what you can come up with. For instance, consider the Stealthbots that are in The Mitchells Vs. The Machines. The team spent a long time thinking about how they would look if they were created by AI. In particular, they had to be styled in a way where they would appear and move differently from humans.

Therefore, you are going to see a combination of hand-painted and a watercolor approach when it comes to the human world. Then, there is a different style when it comes to the robots. In particular, you could say that this is more typical of CGI. Blended together, this works well to differentiate between the characters and how they operate.

Tools From Spider-Verse

There were some tools used in Spider-Verse that were able to help with the development of The Mitchells Vs. The Machines. In particular, these were the tools that helped to create Gwen’s World. The landscape in The Mitchells Vs. The Machines were often natural and had a lot of grass and trees. So, the tools used before were going to help with scenes like these.

Let’s not forget that it is a similar team that worked on Spider-Verse and that is now going to be helping with The Mitchells Vs. The Machine. Indeed, the show won the Best Animated Feature and this is a huge achievement. They will be looking to do something similar with this new show.

The Release of The Mitchells Vs. The Machine

If this is a movie that you are interested in, you are going to be pleased to hear that it is available to watch on Netflix now. It is around 1hour and 54 minutes long and rated U. This means that it is suitable for the whole family. You can follow this dysfunctional family as they battle in a robot apocalypse and have to attempt to save the world. Some of the cast includes Danny McBride, Abbi Jacobson and Maya Rudolph. It has a high rating so far as watchers enjoy the quirkiness of the movie.

There is no doubt that anybody that loves animation and creativity is going to appreciate this movie. Not only does it have a lot of action and a good storyline, but you can really see how different it is as an animation. The style is unique, engaging and evolves throughout the movie. Indeed, you can see the watercolor style playing a part in the movie and this is something that has never been done before.
