Best iPhones in Kenya

Apple makes some of the best smartphones that compete with its rivals in the Android world as well.

Just last year, its top models ranked high in the top ten shipped smartphones worldwide even beating Samsung – Apple had 7 devices in this list.

Here are the best iPhones to buy in Kenya right now if you’re looking to upgrade.

iPhone 15 – Ksh 142,000

This list starts with the base iPhone 15 which is just as powerful as its siblings in the 15 series.

It comes with the A16 Bionic processor which powered the iPhone 14 Pro paired with 6GB RAM and either 128GB or 256GB of storage.

It comes compact with a 6.1 screen what Apple calls Super Retina XDR OLED with Dynamic Island notch, 2000 nits brightness and 60Hz refresh rate protected by Ceramic Shield Glass. Sadly there’s no always-on-display and no secondary mic.

Good thing you get great stereo speakers and a USB-C port that you can use for charging and as a display port. You can connect other accessories such as a mouse or keyboard.

It comes with an aluminium frame with a glass back – both the front and rear glass backs are made by Corning. It is also IP68 certified.

It ships with iOS 17 out of the box with up to six years of updates which means it will get its last upgrade with iOS 23 in 2029. iOS 17 comes with new features like Standby Mode, Contact posters, interactive widgets, Emergency SOS via satellite and more. It also has second-gen UWB.

Cameras that come with the iPhone 15 include a 48MP dual main camera featuring OIS and a 12MP ultrawide. There’s a 12MP wide selfie camera at the front with OIS. Both cameras can shoot up to 4K video at 24/25/30/60fps.

You can also shoot cinematic mode video at 4K. You get the usual Apple image processing features such as Photonic Engine, Deep Fusio, Night Mode and Smart HDR. The RAW Capture feature is missing here.

The iPhone 15 comes with a 3349mAh battery that’s even bigger than the 3200mAh battery and 3279mAh battery of the iPhone 14 Pro and base iPhone 14 respectively. It charges with a slow speed of 20W and you can’t even use a faster charger with it.

The phone starts charging pretty fast at the beginning – taking 30 minutes to go from empty to 58% and in an hour to 85%. From here, the charging speeds slow as the phone starts taking in 4W so a full charge needs an additional 50 minutes.

The iPhone 15 comes in Black, Blue, Green, Yellow and Pink with a matte finish.

iPhone 15 Pro – Ksh 190,000

The iPhone 15 Pro comes powered by the A17 Pro chipset(No Bionic name next to it) – the same as the one on the Pro Max version which means you can play console games like Assassin’s Creed Mirage, Resident Evil Village and Resident Evil 4 Remake.

The processor also supports the ability to shoot 4K 60fps in ProRes RAW.

It also comes with iOS 17 upgradeable to iOS 23.

It comes with a titanium frame(the same as the Max) and matte glass back and front made by Corning. Apple also ditched the stainless steel for aluminium on the inside which is why it’s lighter than you’d think. It also comes with IP68 ingress protection.

The display is a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR OLED screen with 2000 nits brightness protected by Ceramic Glass. It supports a 120Hz refresh rate and an Always-on display.

Apple added a new Action Key which replaces the mute switch that comes with predefined functions.

For optics, it has a triple main setup led by a 48MP primary camera with OIS, a 12MP ultrawide and 12MP telephoto with OIS and 3X optical zoom(The Pro Max supports 5X optical zoom but the 3X telephoto shots by the Pro are much better). It also has a LiDAR scanner.

The front sports a 12MP selfie camera with OIS. All cameras support cinematic video(4K 30fps) and can shoot up to 4K 60fps video – ProRes with an external storage drive. Action video is capped at 2.8K 60fps. You can shoot both 48MP RAW and 48MP HEIF/JPG photos.

Like the base 15, you get the Photonic Engine, Smart HDR, Deep Fusion, Photographic Styles and automatic Night Mode.

Unlike the Max’s 256GB, storage for the Pro starts at 128GB. And unlike the base, RAM starts at 8GB.

While the iPhone 15 has a Type-C 2.0 port, the Pro has a Type-C 3.2 Gen 2 port which supports 10Gbps transfers. Like the base iPhone 15, the Pro has Emergency SOS via satellite and second-gen UWB.

The iPhone 15 Pro comes with a slightly larger 3274mAh battery compared to the 14 Pro but smaller than the base 15.

It supports 20W and higher wattage charging which means you can juice up the phone from empty to full in an hour and a half(30 minutes to 50%). It supports 15W MagSafe and Qi wireless charging. It also has 4.5W reverse wired.

Available colours include Natural Titanium, Black Titanium, White Titanium and Blue Titanium.

iPhone 15 Pro Max – Ksh 225,000

Besides the bigger 6.7-inch screen and a 5X telephoto, the Max shares the same design as the Pro model including the titanium body, action button, Type-C port and the A17 chipset. It is still the same size as the 14 Pro Max but less heavy by 20 grams.

The Max model starts with 256GB storage and 8GB RAM.

iPhone 15 Pro Max

You get the same cameras as the Pro and as mentioned above a 5X telephoto instead of a 3X telephoto – they both use what Apple calls a tetraprism periscope(folded optical design) that also has a 3D sensor‑shift OIS support and autofocus module to counteract camera shake.

iPhone 15 Pro Max has a 4441mAh battery which is slightly bigger than its predecessor’s 4323mAh battery that supports upto 20W wired charging and 15W wireless charging. With a 20W charger, you can get to 80% in an hour and a quick 15 minutes will get you to 30%. A full charge needs an hour and 50 minutes.

iPhone 14 Pro Max – Ksh 210,000

The iPhone 14 Pro Max was the best iPhone of 2022. Apple killed off the notch and switched to the actionable “Dynamic Island” pill made of two cutouts and finally brought the Always-on display supported by the new Display Engine and a new 48MP main rear camera.

They also bumped the screen brightness to 2000 nits and launched a new colour too – Deep Purple and Space Black.

Other new features the 14 series first brought were crash detection and Emergency SOS via satellite now in the 15 series.

iPhone 14 Pro Max

The screen has a relatively higher resolution screen with HDR10, 120Hz refresh rate and DolbyVision and is protected by Ceramic Shield glass. It also comes with an IP68 rating.

It shipped with iOS 16 with software support until 2029. The A16 Bionic chipset powers the phone paired with 6GB RAM and storage options going all the way to 1TB.

Besides the 48MP primary, the rest of the cameras include a 12MP telephoto(3X optical zoom), 12MP ultrawide and a 12MP selfie camera. All three shoot 4K video at 24/25/30/60 fps including cinematic mode(portrait video). There are two new video stabilization modes – Action Mode(2.8K) and Enhanced Stabilization as well.

All cameras except the ultrawide have OIS support – Apple introduced OIS to the selfie camera with the 14 series. You can shoot both High-res 48MP RAW and 12MP RAW with the main camera.

The 14 Pro Max has a 4323mAh battery which is surprisingly smaller than its predecessor but with better endurance. It supports 20W charging and unlike the new 15 series, the 14 series has the Lightning port. It also supports 15W wireless charging both MagSafe and Qi2.

You can charge to 48% in 30 minutes and to full you need to top up in an hour and 52 minutes.

iPhone 13 Pro Max – Ksh 150,000

iPhone 13 Pro Max launched in late 2021 is still a value buy 2 years and 4 months later. When it was unveiled, it boasted new upgrades from the processor, screen, battery and cameras thanks to the brighter lens and bigger sensor plus a 3X telephoto. It also has a relatively smaller notch.

The 13 Pro Max comes with a new 6.7-inch 120Hz screen and 1200 nits peak brightness protected by Ceramic Shield glass. The back has Corning Glass with a stainless steel frame. It also has an IP68 rating. It has newer colours led by the Sierra Blue version.

The phone has the A15 Bionic chipset with 6GB RAM and is powered by iOS 15 and software support up to 2028.

iPhone 13 Pro Max

For cameras, the Pro Max has a 12MP primary with OIS featuring a bigger sensor, a 12MP telephoto with OIS and up to 3X optical zoom plus a 12MP ultrawide with a brighter lens.

You also get a 12MP selfie camera – sadly it doesn’t come with OIS like the 14 series and newer. All four cameras can shoot up to 4K 24/25/30/60 fps video including cinematic mode(portrait video).

The battery included is a 4352mAh which is bigger than the 14 Pro Max. This was the year that Apple started shipping slimmer boxes that come with no charging unit included. The 13 Pro Max supports up to 27W charging with the Lightning port.

The regular 20W Apple charger can top up the phone to 42% in half an hour and to 100% in an hour and 46 minutes. Wireless MagSafe charging lets it top up to 25% in 30 minutes and a full charge takes 2 hours and 20 minutes.

You can use a 65W PD charger that can juice up the phone to 55% in 30 minutes and to 83% in one hour.
