American Tower Corporation (ATC) and ProFuturo, have announced a partnership aimed at transforming children’s education through technology. Initially, the program will be deployed in 44 schools in Africa and Latin America. The joint project will kick off with a first phase in Africa focused on strengthening education with technology schools in Kenya. The initiative aims to assess the specific needs of under-resourced schools to implement innovative practices and prepare them for a successful digital education transition.
ATC Kenya CEO, George Odenyo said that the project is part of ATC Kenya’s vision of building a more connected Kenya, “We constantly work with key partners to ensure that our Digital Communities are well equipped to employ the use of technology for digital equity and literacy, as well as career upskilling which are geared towards enhancing the lives of community members”.
American Tower’s Digital Communities offer internet access, computer training, and programs. These help young people get an education, adults develop careers, and communities access healthcare resources. This initiative is expected to reach about 4,500 students and 475 teachers in the three pilot countries. The program will be expanded to more schools and countries on both continents.
ATC is an American company that provides network infrastructure sites for telcos. In Kenya, ATC Kenya holds a significant share (38.81%) of the passive infrastructure market. ProFuturo is a technology-enabled education innovation program of Fundación Telefónica and Fundación la Caixa.
