OpenAI, creators of ChatGPT, has today announced a new partnership with the popular social network Reddit. This partnership will see the popular AI company bring Reddit’s content to ChatGPT and “other new products.” This announcement comes just days after it unveiled its latest multimodal AI, GPT-4o (“o” for “omni”).
OpenAI will use Reddit’s data API to get real-time, structured, and unique content from the social network platform. The AI startup has been working on getting ChatGPT to provide accurate answers for recent topics. Now, it believes that leveraging Reddit’s vast community knowledge will help its AI tools to better understand and showcase content, especially on new topics.
“We are thrilled to partner with Reddit to enhance ChatGPT with uniquely timely and relevant information, and to explore the possibilities to enrich the Reddit experience with AI-powered features,” Brad Lightcap, OpenAI’s COO says in a post.
Part of this partnership will also see OpenAI become a Reddit advertising partner. Additionally, Reddit will be introducing new AI-powered features to redditors and mods on the platform.
The AI startup recently announced a similar partnership with Stack Overflow seeking to enhance ChatGPT’s technical knowledge. However, this development did not excite developers who have been using the Q&A forum.
Reddit similarly closed a $60 million contract with Google Alphabet back in February. This agreement would allow the tech giant to use Reddit’s Data API to improve its products and services such as Search and its AI model – Gemini.
Reddit has recently been the preferred place for getting real opinions and reviews – from humans – given the recent bloat surrounding AI and bot-generated content on the internet. We wait to see the response from the community over this development in the coming days. As of publishing this post, the announcement has drawn mixed reactions already on social media.
