After a few days of speculation and anticipation, OpenAI has finally taken to the stage to present some of its new updates and a new slew of products.
Among them is a new desktop application for ChatGPT, designed to make the product easier to access and use thanks to a new UI.
Opening the event was ChatGPT CTO, Mira Murati, with a discussion of developing a product that is more easy to use “wherever you are”. She also announced that the company will be releasing GPT-4o, a new model of the ChatGPT AI designed to bring GPT-4-level intelligence to all users including those on the free version of ChatGPT. The new model will be released over the next few weeks.
“An important part of our mission is being able to make our advanced AI tools available to everyone for free,” she stated.
According to Murati, GPT-4o will be able to reason across voice, text and vision, something they have been working on for months. “This allows us to bring the GPT-4-class intelligence to our free users.”
The new model will be able to give real-time responses without having to wait a couple of seconds. So, you can interrupt the AI as it answers and it will adjust its response based on what you say or enquire. This was shown very clearly via a live demonstration where the OpenAI team commands the model to adjust its voice as it tells a story. It was quite fascinating to see how fast the model responds in real-time.
In the demo, the AI showed some really mind-blowing capabilities showing that it can read emotions, perform live translations and even identify what a user is wearing through its new native vision feature and comment on the outfit without being asked to.
The vision capabilities will be a huge talking point as it also enables the AI to solve mathematic or coding problems in real-time or even read a statement and express an emotional reaction to it.
From the livestream, it was clear how much OpenAI wanted to showcase the new features that will come with GPT-4o once it starts rolling out. What was very apparent was that talking to AI just got a little too real!
GPT-4o will be about 50% cheaper than the current model. The model has been rumoured to be replacing Siri in the future, which would definitely be a welcomed move by most iPhone users.
