AI and technology will be crucial in the upcoming 2024 Olympics in Paris.

The Paris 2024 Summer Olympics are set to begin this week, and athletes from across the globe are undoubtedly preparing to showcase their superhuman abilities. However, one of the many key features that will play a crucial role in the global sports competition is artificial intelligence and cutting-edge technology.

From AI-powered security systems to virtual reality experiences for fans, the upcoming Olympics will certainly push the boundaries of innovation to give the world the ultimate experience of peak athleticism.

Check out our carefully curated list of how technology will take center stage at the Paris 2024 Olympics below.

AI in Olympic Preparation and Performance

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has embraced the future with open arms, launching “The Olympic AI Agenda” in April. The aim of this strategy is to integrate AI into various aspects of the games, from enhancing athlete support to revolutionizing the spectator experience. However, IOC President Thomas Bach has been quick to reassure traditionalists, stressing that “the 100 meters will always have to be run by an athlete – a human being.” At least for now, it seems (cue dramatic score).

Protecting Athletes via Cybersecurity

One of the most crucial applications of AI at the Paris Olympics will be in the sphere of cybersecurity. With female athletes facing increasing online harassment, the IOC is taking a proactive stance. Sarah Walker, an Olympic silver medalist and member of the IOC Athletes’ Commission, revealed that every athlete’s social media will be monitored for hate comments, with AI tech swiftly removing them before they can be seen. This will help the athletes focus on their performance without the distraction of online negativity.

AI-Powered Surveillance

The Olympics have always been a high-profile target for security threats, and Paris 2024 is leaving nothing to chance. Advanced AI-driven systems will monitor millions of data points in real-time, detecting and addressing potential risks to athletes and spectators alike. Facial recognition technology and smart surveillance cameras will ensure that the only drama that unfolds will be on the field of play.

Talent Scouting

Perhaps one of the most exciting applications of AI is in talent identification. Professor Amit Joshi, an AI expert and member of the IOC’s AI Working Group, highlighted how AI could level the playing field for athletes from diverse backgrounds. Imagine a world where the next Michael Phelps could be discovered in a remote village, thanks to AI’s ability to analyze potential and identify raw talent. Tech giants Intel and Samsung are already piloting such systems, offering participants at the Olympic Stadium a chance to discover their hidden athletic potential through AI-powered assessments.

AI Commentators and Personalized Highlights

NBC’s announcement of an AI-generated clone of sports broadcaster Al Michaels for daily streaming recaps will likely disrupt how Olympic coverage works. This AI narrator, trained on Michael’s previous appearances, will deliver personalized 10-minute highlight packages tailored to subscriber preferences. With the potential to package highlights from 5,000 hours of live coverage in 7 million different ways, AI will ensure that no fan misses out on their favorite events, regardless of time zone differences.

VR and AR for Athletes and Fans

Virtual and Augmented Reality technologies are set to transform both athlete training and fan engagement. Olympians can now use VR to simulate race environments, mentally preparing for the challenges they will face. Meanwhile, fans at home can wear VR headsets to experience the adrenaline rush of the 100-meter dash or the sheer power of a javelin throw, all from their living rooms. Interactive spectatorship will not only be confined to physical locations anymore.

Precision Technologies

Gone are the days of stopwatches and human error. The 2024 Olympics will feature state-of-the-art timing systems, including laser beams, electronic touchpads, and photo-finish cameras capable of capturing results with millisecond accuracy. Victory will be determined by nothing less than absolute excellence, with no room for doubt or dispute.

AI for Sustainability

As nations around the world become increasingly conscious of environmental issues, the Paris Olympics will leverage tech to minimize its ecological footprint. AI systems will optimize energy usage in venues, manage waste efficiently, and even help design eco-friendly facilities that blend innovation with conservation. It’s a gold medal effort in environmental stewardship for large-scale events.

Behind the Scenes

Powering all these tech marvels are advanced semiconductor chips, designed with the help of companies like Cadence. Their EDA tools and AI-enhanced computational software are crucial in creating the high-performance chips that enable everything from VR headsets to real-time data processing. Cadence’s Palladium Z3 and Protium X3 platforms will be at the forefront, tackling the increasing complexity of system design and accelerating the development of the most advanced SoCs (system-on-a-chip) that will make the magic happen in Paris.

At the end of the day, it’s important to remember that the Olympics are, at their core, a celebration of human achievement. The challenge for Paris 2024 will be to harness the power of AI and cutting-edge tech without overshadowing the athletes themselves. After all, it’s the human stories of triumph, perseverance, and sportsmanship that truly captivate the world.

The Paris 2024 Olympics will run from July 26 to August 11, and all games will be available to stream live from Showmax.
