Google has finally officially begun rolling out Android 15 to its lineup of Pixel devices. This latest iteration of the world’s most popular mobile operating system brings a host of new features, with a particular emphasis on privacy, security, and enhanced functionality for foldables and tablets.
The standout feature of Android 15 is undoubtedly the new “Privacy Space.” This long-awaited addition allows users to create a secure vault for sensitive apps, keeping them out of sight and away from prying eyes.
Be it Tinder, banking apps, or that guilty-pleasure game (hello, Candy Crush fans) you’d rather keep under wraps, Privacy Space ensures they won’t appear in your recent apps, notifications, or settings. To access this vault, users will need to provide additional authentication, which adds an extra layer of security to your most private apps.
Foldable devices and tablet users will also rejoice at the introduction of app pairing functionality. This feature allows you to save your favorite split-screen combinations as a single icon, which is perfect for multitasking pros who frequently use specific apps side-by-side.
Additionally, the taskbar on these devices has become more versatile. Users can now easily pin or unpin it with a simple toggle. This offers quick access to frequently used apps when needed and a cleaner, more immersive experience when not.
Building on the recently introduced Theft Detection Lock, Android 15 takes device security a step higher. The update introduces authentication requirements for SIM removal and disabling Find My Device, making it much harder for thieves to cover their tracks.
Google will also roll out a feature called Remote Lock. This allows users to lock their device using another Android phone, their phone number, and a simple security check. Even better is that these security features aren’t limited to Android 15, with Google promising availability on “most” devices running Android 10 and newer.
Going back to Pixel users, there’s more in store this month with the October Pixel Feature Drop. Night Sight for Instagram will help you capture stunning low-light photos directly in the app, while Audio Magic Eraser gains additional controls to fine-tune your audio editing.
In the coming weeks, Pixel Tablet owners will also gain the ability to seamlessly move media to their Pixel phones by simply holding the devices next to each other – a small but meaningful step towards a more integrated ecosystem.
While Android 15 is currently exclusive to Pixel devices (Pixel 6 series and newer, including the Pixel Fold and Pixel Tablet), it’s only a matter of time before other manufacturers begin rolling out their versions of the update. As always, the exact timeline will vary depending on the device and manufacturer.
