The Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) has updated its import permit requirements to streamline the importation process.
This notice provides essential requirements for processing an import permit for ICT products and systems, and is intended for all users of the National Electronic Single Window System.
Kenya National Electronic Single Window System (NESWS), otherwise referred to as the TradeNet System, represents an online platform administered by KenTrade, purposed to facilitate trade and transport through the electronic submission of standardized information and documentation pertaining to import, export, and transit regulatory requirements
In the notice, Kenya’s ICT regulator emphasizes that all importers of ICT products for commercial sale must possess the appropriate licenses for those products. CA has also stated that compliance certificates are mandatory.
“All importers of ICT products meant for sale are required to attach a copy of the valid compliance certificate associated with the license they hold for which the importation permit is being sought.”
Invoices pertaining to imported ICT products shall include the model number and quantity to facilitate confirmation of Type Approval status and to enable efficient inspection and release from customs.
The ICT regulator advises importers to cross-reference the list of type-approved equipment available on the Authority’s website and to attach a screenshot of the specific model as per the aforementioned list.
For internet-connected devices intended for sale within Kenya, importers are required to submit technical specifications verifying compliance with IPv6 requirements, per CA’s guidelines.
Importers of ICT products and systems should be aware that, depending on the complexity and novelty of non-Type Approved ICT products, further information may be requested on a case-by-case basis.
