WhatsApp is testing some handy new features that could make answering calls a lot smoother and a bit more private. In its latest Android beta (version 2.25.10.16), the app can mute your mic and turn off your camera before you even pick up a call.
Let’s start with the mic mute. If you’ve ever scrambled to silence background noise after answering a voice call, this one’s for you. With the new update, you can now mute yourself ahead of time.
It’s a small tweak, but a practical one, especially if you’re in a noisy place or just not ready to speak right away.
On the video call side, WhatsApp is also giving users more control with a pre-call camera toggle. This lets you join a video call with your camera already off, ideal for those surprise video calls when you’re not camera-ready.
Another feature being tested is emoji reactions during video calls. Think of them like non-verbal cues you can throw into the mix clapping, laughing, thumbs-up, etc. without having to interrupt the conversation. It’s a nice touch that adds a bit of interactivity and personality to group chats.
All of these updates are currently in beta, so they’re only available to testers for now. But assuming things go smoothly, they’re likely to roll out more broadly in the coming weeks.
It’s clear WhatsApp is focusing on giving users more control and comfort during calls, something rival platforms like Zoom and Google Meet have already leaned into.
By bringing in pre-call audio and video controls, along with fun interaction features, WhatsApp is closing the gap and improving its usability as a go-to calling app. If you’re eager to test these features, you can join the WhatsApp Beta via Play Store.
