WhatsApp is rolling out significant updates to its voice messaging capabilities, introducing a streamlined recording process and a new transcription feature aimed at enhancing user convenience and accessibility.
In its latest iOS beta version 25.13.10.70, WhatsApp has introduced a single-tap voice recording function. Previously, users had to press and hold the microphone button or swipe up to lock the recording.
With the new update, tapping the microphone button once automatically starts the recording, eliminating the need for continuous pressing or additional gestures. This change simplifies the process, making it more intuitive, especially for users who frequently send voice messages.
Complementing the simplified recording, WhatsApp is also introducing a voice message transcription feature.
This functionality allows users to read the content of voice messages instead of listening to them, which is particularly useful in situations where audio playback is inconvenient, such as during meetings, while travelling, or in noisy environments.
The transcription feature enhances accessibility, benefiting users who are deaf, hard of hearing, or have auditory processing difficulties.
The transcription process is conducted entirely on the user’s device, ensuring that voice messages and their transcripts remain end-to-end encrypted. This approach maintains user privacy, as neither WhatsApp nor third parties can access the content of the messages.
WhatsApp provides users with control over the transcription feature through three options. Automatic transcription allows voice messages to be transcribed as soon as they are received, offering immediate access to the text version.
Manual transcription gives users the flexibility to transcribe messages on demand, helping to conserve device resources. For those who prefer not to use it, the feature can also be disabled entirely, ensuring that voice messages are never converted to text.
These options allow users to tailor the feature to their preferences and privacy considerations.
The new features are currently available to select WhatsApp Beta testers on iOS and Android platforms. WhatsApp has not yet announced a specific timeline for the global rollout but plans to expand access to all users in the coming weeks.
Initially, the transcription feature supports languages including English, Portuguese, Spanish, Russian, and Hindi, with plans to add more languages over time.
