WhatsApp has hinted at the imminent release of its long-awaited iPad app, indicating a major expansion of its platform.
On May 26, the official WhatsApp account on X (formerly Twitter) responded with an eyes emoji to a post suggesting the need for an iPad version.
This subtle acknowledgement suggests that Meta is preparing to launch WhatsApp for iPad, which has been in beta testing via TestFlight for nearly two years.
The absence of an official iPad app has been a huge gap in WhatsApp’s portfolio, especially considering the app’s widespread use on iPhones and Macs.
iPad users have had to rely on workarounds or third-party clients, which often come with limitations and security concerns. The introduction of a native iPad app would provide a more seamless and secure messaging experience for users within the Apple ecosystem.
This development aligns with Meta’s broader strategy to enhance its presence on the iPad platform. Reports indicate that an Instagram app for iPad is also in the works, suggesting a concerted effort by Meta to optimise its suite of applications for Apple’s tablet.
The timing of this tease is interesting since it comes just two weeks before Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2025, scheduled for June 9.
While WhatsApp’s announcements are independent of Apple’s event, the proximity raises speculation about potential collaborations or feature integrations that could be unveiled during the conference.
