Elon Musk is upgrading the way users communicate on X (formerly Twitter) with the introduction of XChat, a powerful new encrypted messaging feature.
The feature introduces a fresh layer of privacy and security to the platform, as X continues to evolve from a social media app into a full-fledged “everything app.”
XChat’s headline feature is end-to-end encryption (E2EE), which Musk describes as “Bitcoin-style.” While the comparison may be more symbolic than technical, Bitcoin doesn’t use traditional end-to-end encryption; it signals Musk’s emphasis on cryptographic privacy.
With this system in place, only the sender and recipient can read the messages. Even X itself cannot access the contents of a chat, making it significantly more secure than traditional DMs.
Users will also be required to set up a four-digit passcode when enabling XChat, adding an extra layer of authentication to prevent unauthorized access.
This setup ensures that even if someone gains access to your X account, they’ll still need your code to view your private chats.
Additionally, XChat will feature vanishing messages. These allow users to send messages that disappear after a specified time, offering more control over sensitive conversations.
Another standout feature is the ability to make audio and video calls directly within the app, and crucially, without needing to share your phone number.
This move positions XChat as a strong contender against messaging giants like WhatsApp, which still requires phone number verification to connect users. With voice and video calling built in, X users can now connect securely without revealing personal information.
These security upgrades also hint at a deeper purpose: laying the foundation for peer-to-peer payments and commerce inside the app.
Musk has previously stated his intention to turn X into a super app, similar to China’s WeChat, where users can chat, shop, and send money all in one place.
Encrypted messages and additional verification steps will likely be essential in ensuring safe, in-stream financial transactions in the near future.
XChat is currently in beta testing for X Premium subscribers, with a wider rollout planned for later this week.
