Safaricom Ethiopia has achieved a major milestone, surpassing 10 million 90-day active customers across the country, just four years after receiving its operating license.
Speaking on the achievement, Safaricom Ethiopia CEO Wim Vanhelleputte said, “Achieving an active customer base of 10 million is a significant milestone for us, but it also brings with it great responsibility. Behind each SIM card, there is an individual, a family, a business, and a future.”
Since its entry into the market, Safaricom Ethiopia has invested over 300 billion Ethiopian birr ($2.27 billion) in telecom and digital financial infrastructure.
This commitment is paying off, with a fast-growing 4G network now covering more than half the population through 3,141 active sites spread across over 150 towns and cities.
Customer adoption continues to soar, with an average of 31,000 new users joining daily, clear evidence of the demand for dependable mobile services in Ethiopia’s rapidly digitizing society.
But the company’s impact goes beyond connectivity. Safaricom Ethiopia employs 900 people directly, 97% of whom are Ethiopian.
Through its broad ecosystem of brand ambassadors, distributors, and subcontractors, the company has also generated indirect employment for more than 20,000 people.
This 10 million customer milestone highlights not just commercial growth, but a broader partnership between the company, the Ethiopian government, regulators, and society at large.
It symbolizes trust, collaboration, and a shared ambition to accelerate digital access and opportunity across the country.
In a message of gratitude, the company extended appreciation to its customers, the Ethiopian government, regulators, and partners, saying, “We extend our heartfelt thanks to all our customers for choosing Safaricom Ethiopia as their digital partner.”
