Huawei Awards E-Lab to the 2013 Makerere University Innovation Challenge Winners

Huawei was the awards exclusive sponsor at the Makerere University’s Science and Technology Innovations Challenges 2013.

The Innovation Challenge is under the iLabs@MAK Project of Makerere University, which started in 2010, with the broader objective of nurturing tomorrow’s innovators for Uganda’s socio-economic transformation. The initiative is achieved by facilitating students to form Engineering Design Clubs, equipping them with hardware and software and training them to design and prototype meaningful robotics and electronics applications.

The hybrid pitch demarcator by Dr. Obote College Boroboro was this year’s winning project- a robot that utilizes multiple energy sources, to automatically demarcate pitches (such as cricket, basketball, football pitches), roads and parking yards. It is run with a custom program that has the relevant topographical and other information pertinent to the area to be demarcated. The robot moves, drawing the relevant straight lines (full and dotted), and curves until the job is completed.  The winners received an E-Lab including 20 computers and 15 Windows smart phones for the winning individuals courtesy of Huawei Uganda. The students were tasked to present innovations involved use of robots, and engage in mobile phone disassembling and reassembling.
