Mate XT Ultimate Design

Huawei has officially launched the global variant of the Mate XT Ultimate Design, the world’s first tri-fold smartphone. The unveiling took place in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on February 18, 2025, marking a significant milestone in the evolution of foldable smartphone technology.

The Mate XT Ultimate Design represents a leap forward in smartphone engineering with its unique tri-fold mechanism. This design allows the device to transform seamlessly between different modes.

  • Compact Mode: When folded, the device functions as a 6.4-inch smartphone, offering portability without compromising on functionality.
  • Intermediate Mode: Partially unfolded, it expands to a 7.9-inch display, ideal for tasks that benefit from a larger screen without fully transitioning to tablet mode.
  • Tablet Mode: Fully unfolded, the Mate XT boasts a 10.2-inch display, providing a tablet-like experience for immersive media consumption and productivity tasks.

This versatility is achieved through an advanced precision hinge system, enabling smooth transitions between modes while maintaining durability. The device’s slim profile, measuring just 3.66 mm when fully opened, enhances its ergonomic appeal.

Technical Specs and Performance

Under the hood, the Mate XT Ultimate Design is powered by Huawei’s HiSilicon Kirin 9010 processor, a 7nm chipset designed to deliver robust performance. Paired with 16GB of RAM, the device ensures seamless multitasking and responsiveness.

Storage options include 256GB, 512GB, and a generous 1TB variant, catering to users with varying needs for space.

.

The OLED display supports a resolution of 2232 by 3184 pixels in its fully expanded form. The adaptive refresh rate, ranging up to 120 HZ, ensures smooth scrolling and an enhanced viewing experience.

Camera System

Photography enthusiasts will appreciate the Mate XT’s versatile camera setup:

  • Rear Cameras:
    • 50MP main sensor for high-resolution images.
    • 12MP ultra-wide lens to capture expansive scenes.
    • 12MP periscope telephoto lens offering 5.5x optical zoom for detailed close-ups.
  • Front Camera:
    • 8MP sensor designed for clear and sharp selfies.

Huawei’s proprietary XMAGE imaging technology further enhances image quality.

Battery Life and Charging

Equipped with a 5600mAh battery, the Mate XT Ultimate Design is built to support its multifunctional capabilities throughout the day. The device offers 66W wired charging and 50W wireless charging, keeping users connected.

Market Positioning and Pricing

The global launch of Mate XT Ultimate Design is a strategic move by Huawei to assert its presence in the premium smartphone market, especially amid challenges posed by international trade restrictions.

Priced at €3,499 (approximately $3,662), the device positions itself as a luxury item, reflecting its advanced technology and unique design.

However, this premium pricing, combined with potential limitations in app availability due to ongoing software ecosystem constraints, may influence its adoption in markets outside China.

Analysts suggest that while the Mate XT showcases Huawei’s engineering prowess, its success will depend on consumer willingness to invest in cutting-edge yet high-cost technology.

The Huawei XT Mate Ultimate Design sets a new benchmark in the smartphone industry with its tri-fold design and high-end specifications. As it enters the global market, it challenges competitors and offers consumers a glimpse into the future of mobile devices.

Availability and Pricing in Kenya

Kenyan consumers can now experience the Mate XT Ultimate Design, with the device available through various retailers:

  • Price in Kenya: The Mate XT Ultimate Design is priced at approximately KSh 295,000 for the 16GB RAM and 1TB storage variant.
  • Where to Buy: The device is available at select retailers, including Smartphones Planet and Avechi Kenya.

Potential buyers are encouraged to verify current pricing and availability, as these may vary between retailers.

Its availability in the Kenyan market offers consumers access to cutting-edge technology, blending the functionalities of a smartphone and a tablet into a single, versatile device.
