If you thought you had seen it all, sit back and watch as more unfolds. Smartphone price wars hit a new notch of low as Mozilla enters India with a new smartphone, the Intex Cloud FX at Rs 1999 or $33. This is where we are at, a fully functional smartphone, see the specs sheet.
Though there are compromises made, Mozilla via Intex, an OEM that sells in India Friday launched the current lowest priced smartphone in India. This is the first time Firefox OS smartphones will sell in India and will be available exclusively via Snapdeal. Once in a while it’s good to have the words exclusively selling but if it’s not the biggest player in the market I count that as a compromise when one couldn’t get the best retail channels on board. The Intex Cloud FX has most of the bells and buttons of a smartphone.
The specs sheet is as below:
- Firefox OS
- 2mp rear camera
- 1Ghz Snapdragon 6821 processor
- 128MB RAM
- 256MB ROM expandable via microSD to 4GB
- 3.5 inch HVGA Display
- Dual SIM, both GSM
- Bluetooth/WiFi
- 1250mAh battery
- Colours: Black and white
This would seem to be targeted to the first time smartphone user who has for the longest time used a feature phone, at this price it seems a super bargain as the user moves over to smartphone world. Firefox is yet to hit the market proper and even though this makes it the 18th country to launch in, the Firefox OS platform is yet to hit a percentage point in smartphone share globally.
